RMD Dance Inc. - Company Management
|
Giorgio C. Costonis
Education Northeastern University
Major Public Relations
Minor Business Communications
Giorgio has owned two companies that were reasonably successful prior to RMD. During his college years he started a commercial/residential painting company called Handsome Homes. In the first year of operation he mad enough money to pay for two years tuition at his university. When he turned the company over to his brother two years later he had several commercial repeat clients and 15 full time employees.
Entering his final year in college Giorgio saw an opportunity to make additional money by selling commercial cellular phone contracts to the contacts that he had made while interning at the advertising firm Hill, Holiday, and Connors. He and one of his fellow students started Bayside Cellular, which Giorgio was both partner and president of. Some of their clients included the Eaton Corporation and the US Coast Guard.
Fascinated by strategic business planning, Giorgio went in to the consulting business. His opportunity came when he was hired on a commission only basis at Corporate Development Services, one of the leading management consulting firms that deals exclusively with the construction industry. He quickly learned the product he was selling and was promoted to Marketing Director of the firm in 8 months. Giorgio would deal directly with clients, making initial recommendations and selling substantial long-term fee based and success fee consulting contracts to companies around the country. With his efforts, Corporate Development Services doubled their revenue in his first 18 months. Shortly afterward, Giorgio was promoted to Executive Vice President of Sales. To maximize sales potential for the firm, Giorgio came up with the idea of starting an organization called Partners for Progress (PFP). The idea was to take 4 member firms, a high profile service firm from every facet of doing business in construction i.e, Legal, Accounting, Consulting, and Personnel Placement and cross reference all four firms client lists. PFP would then introduce clients to their fellow members through joint seminars that their clients would be invited to that were held across the country. In addition, all members would be commissioned 10% on all work, as consultants, if work was contracted and performed by other members. PFP grew so quickly that soon Giorgio had the opportunity to sit on the editorial advisory board of Contractor Marketing Magazine where he contributed weekly articles with timely topics relative to the construction industry. When he left CDS, Giorgio had quadrupled their annual gross revenues.
Musical Background
Giorgio's mother was a concert pianist who taught in the Juliard School of Music. He showed the love of music at a young age in the church choir that his mother directed. For two years he was the lead man in the R & B group Worth the Wait. The group enjoyed limited success with the 1997 hit 'Let Me Make You Hot' which sold 15,000 copies without a distribution deal. As a result they toured up and down the east coast on weekends off and on for 18 months.
In the year 2000 Giorgio started the record label RMD with a distribution deal provided by Pinnacle Distribution in the UK. Pinnacle is the parent company of Jive records. RMD scored several underground hits some of which Giorgio produced or co-produced. His track Trance Tribal Consciousness was charted by the likes of Danny Tenaglia and the Balance Record Pool. In addition, his remix of the KC Flightt hit 'One' hit # 4 on the Yoshitoshi Charts and # 6 on the Global Underground Charts.
KC Flightt
Executive Vice President/Partner/Artist
RMD Dance Inc
In 1987 KC Flightt formally began his career as an artist with his debut single 'Let's Get Jazzy'. With no contacts and no distribution he and his brother Cordell started TMT Records to get the release out there. 'Let's Get Jazzy' shipped an astounding 100,000 units worldwide strictly on the strength of the track and the sheer will of the two brothers and quickly became a club classic record around the world. KC followed his huge debut with 'She's Sexy' a year later (again without distribution) and enjoyed similar success, creating yet another classic dance record, reaffirming the fact that the underground dance scene had embraced him and would stay with him throughout his long and storied career.
With two straight international club hits under his belt, KC caught the attention of RCA who promptly offered him a deal as an artist/producer. His first effort under the RCA/BMG flag was a collaboration with the Talking Heads lead man David Byrne, entitled 'Planet E'. RCA was convinced that the track was another international smash and although their had never been a video done by a major label for a house track, they decided to gamble a large budget on the video production, fly David Byrne in to appear in it, and launch it on MTV, VH1, and BET. 'Planet E' was an instant smash around the world for RCA in sales and airplay on radio and television. RCA used 'Planet E' as the lead single for KC's album 'In Flightt' which performed well enough in sales that a tour was demanded, and as a result, KC went on an 18-month world tour.
After returning from the 'In Flightt' tour KC quickly went into the studio to see if he could use some of the new musical influences and styles he had experienced while on the road in his new material. He began recording his new project for RCA and the first single he completed was 'Voices', a groundbreaking house record using live afro-tribal drum rhythms and vocal chants in which he collaborated with legendary artist Sting of The Police. When the record was completed KC knew he had stumbled onto something special but didn't know what to call it. When he was on his way to the RCA/BMG offices with 'Voices' in hand for an executive listening meeting, he coined the phrase 'tribal house' as an explanation for what style the track was. BMG was in the middle of restructuring the RCA management from top to bottom when KC completed 'Voices'. At that time BMG's corporate management was not interested in anything they felt was not a guaranteed hit never mind a track that could not be defined by conventional musical terms like 'Voices'. KC quickly recognized that BMG did not have the vision to understand the new sound that he created so although under contractual obligation to complete a full album, he negotiated a deal in which the single 'Voices' would be released and he would not have to honor the rest of his commitment with the company.
'Voices' became an instant anthem in clubs around the world. Every big name DJ across every continent on the planet was intrigued by this new 'tribal house' style and regularly rocked the 10 minute anthem in the best venues during peak times. 'Voices' quickly went platinum in sales. The demand was so great that BMG could not print the records quick enough.
With success in hand from 'Voices' KC took off for Jamaica for nearly two years, studying the native music and culture while collaborating with Jamaican artists in the studio as both an artist and producer. He returned to the US briefly when he was offered the opportunity to go on another world tour by Sony Records with Jazz Saxophone Legend Bill Evans. Eager to be part of such a monumental musical experiment, KC again hit the road, this time with The Bill Evans Band for a period of 16 months.
Upon his return to the US, he went on to work with a bevy of artists that were looking for that tribal house sound that he created. During that time he worked with both major label acts as well as small independent label acts so he could keep it real with the underground that gave him so much props and respect over the years. He knew the underground was the reason why he was so successful with his career and never denied the people that were part of it.
Soon he built a professional recording studio of his own called 'Flightt Studios' in Jersey City, NJ. Seeking an independent label that stayed within the underground audience, he partnered with Giorgio Costonis, president of RMD Dance. After becoming partners in RMD, KC again enjoyed success with 'Voices'. 5 new mixes of the classic anthem were released on the legendary UK label Hooj Choons and the project quickly became platinum world wide again. KC followed the success of the 'Voices' remix project on Hooj with another original tribal house release entitled 'One' which was a conscious reaction to the unstable situation(s) in the Middle East and the United States. 'One' performed extremely well, earning peak chart positions in the Global Undergound Chart at # 4 and #6 in the Yoshitoshi Charts.
Seizing the opportunity to capitalize on remixes of classic dance anthems for today's audience KC and Giorgio undertook remix projects of C & C Music Factory's Sweat by contracting Freedom Williams and George Kranz's track Din Da Da which are due out in early 2004 on RMD. In addition, KC has completed his autobiography entitled 'Who Killed KC Flightt?' which includes his new musical album in the front cover of the book. 'Who Killed KC Flightt' is due in stores in mid 2004. The answer to the question 'Who Killed KC Flightt?' is no one. He is still living, just as he always has.
